yumi grew up in the west side in a family of five. she was born the middle child (with a younger sister and older brother), born may 23. there was some confusion following her birth, as her father had been away on a trip at the time of her conception, and her mother had been unwilling to speak of the specifics. eventually she confided in yumi that her real father, her biological one, was a bit... inhuman. meaning, of course, that he was not exactly an earthly creature.
yumi didn't particularly care about her heritage, though. she spent her childhood doing all sorts of normal kid stuff, running around outside and getting herself into trouble with her siblings. she also took a particular liking to dance, and coaxed her parents to enroll her in ballet classes. her natural curiosity was entirely insatiable, and following dance, she began to make inquiries about music, automobiles, nature - anything she could get her hands on.
at school, other kids teased her for her pink hair, her odd habit of asking too many questions, her constant smile. for the most part, she ignored them, more or less oblivious to their insults. eventually, as she continued to disregard them (and, in some cases, try to hug them) they stopped bothering her.
either way, her parents decided it would be best to put their daughter in st. valentine's, hoping the stricter lifestyle would instill some discipline in their carefree daughter. for their sake, she put a little more effort into grades; however, despite her intelligence, she found herself unable - or perhaps purely unwilling - to do well in classes, and her grades continue to fluctuate as she chooses to pursue other interests - dancing, exploring, trying to solve ridiculous scientific equations, toying with the settings on computers, tinkering with children's toys and building intricate lego figures, watching old and/or nerdy tv shows and anime - over her education.

✶ she is completely fascinated by humans. for no apparent reason. she's just always been curious about them, and despite her interest, is absolutely terrible at understanding them. she's willing to be social and loves to chat, but isn't the best at keeping herself within the lines of societal acceptance. ✶ being a half-alien, yumi loves bodies of water (mostly puddles, oddly enough) but doesn't like to swim. she also has an uncanny talent with video games, computers, and the like. ✶ she is more or less oblivious to the world. she thinks everyone should be happy all the time because everything is amazing and interesting and super. ✶ despite being very gullible and somewhat like a small child, yumiko is a surprisingly gifted individual when it comes to detecting lies. nevermind that she can't tell a falsehood to save her life and is still oblivious to sarcasm. ✶ has an absolutely terrible sense of direction, and gets lost often even on the simplest of trips. even if it's just a quick walk to the bus stop.

While she was not necessarily 'normal' in private, the redheaded Tanemura Chihiro - in reality - still preferred to be taken as an ordinary high school girl, even despite her constant curiosity and need to take apart almost every new gadget she saw on the street. In the end, nobody in her immediate family nor any relatives from her Father's side was ever going to be considered as normal, and for obvious reasons too... or at least, obvious to those who actually knew of the truth.
"Now, where's that chick gone off to..." the second year mumbled as she stood before a store at the shopping district in the west, where she immediately stood out amongst all the fashionably-dressed evening couples. But Chihiro didn't care about any of that very much at the moment as her eyes behind a pair of thick-framed glasses flickered around, half of her hair tied up into a messy bun atop her head and her clothing consisted of merely an over-sized t-shirt that belonged to either her brother or her Father. Sloppy, in other words.
However, the hand that rested on her waist soon slid off and shot into the air when she spotted a familiar figure, "Ah! Oiii! Yumi! Yumiko!" she shouted to the pink-haired girl afar whom she had already recognized as one of her cousins, a cousin who - despite being a couple months older than her - had a more petite frame as well as a more child-like personality. Not that Chihiro minded of course, because being someone who had a very obvious sense of 'outsiders' and 'insiders', all of her cousins pretty much had the same importance as her actual siblings.
Trotting up to the coral-haired girl, the redhead was all grins and sparkles as she - ignoring the looks that bypassers were now casting them - pulled out from behind her a large, mechanical gadget that consisted of multiple arms and had only about a gazillion blinking lights all over it, "Look at what I just made, Yumi!" Chihiro exclaimed excitedly, free hand pushing up her glasses so it'd rest above her forehead, "Well, I have no idea what to call it yet, really, but you know what it can do? Guess! Go on! Guess!" she stared at her cousin, but after only waiting for a second for Yumiko to reply, Chihiro cut in again, "Nah, don't guess, I already guessed for ya! It actually brews and pours coffee for you! And it gives you massages too and shoots laser beams from its eyes! Isn't it so neat and super useful for when I actually take over the world?! I mean, I'd actually get to sit on my butt and drink coffee while this thing goes around terrorizing innocent citizens! Cool, huh?!"
With that, the excited Chihiro finally let her heels fall back on the ground path beneath her, the machine in her hand still beeping and blinking all over the place as the mechanical arms twitched, but for some reason, she didn't seem to have any problem with it. After all, she didn't exactly have a problem with calling her cousin out at 9 o'clock at night so she could show off her newest invention, either.

[style=text-align: right;] [/style] On an average day, Tanemura Yumiko liked to think that she was quite good at impersonating the human species. Even if she couldn't help the occasional outburst and found the lure of splashing in large puddles impossible to ignore, she had studied them obsessively for as long as she could remember, and liked to think her act was more or less believable.
But in times like these, when it was late at night and hardly anyone was around to see, she took the chance to really let loose and be herself, regardless of how similar that self was to her 'human' one. And sometimes that meant singing superhero theme songs while walking on nothing but the cracks in the sidewalk on her way to the mall to meet her cousin's newest toy.
"Nanananananananananana Batman!" She sang, timing each syllable to match one of her lurching steps. "Batman! Batmaaaan!"
Her behavior, paired with her odd choice of clothing - a raggedy blue sweatshirt boasting a faded designer logo worn over a pale, pink, flowery summer dress with knee-high gray knit legwarmers underneath - and vibrant pink hair made Yumi quite the spectacle. Not that she particularly minded. Too caught up in her imagination, she continued to sing and hop, barely conscious of where she was going.
Eventually, by some miracle, she ended up at her intended destination - the shopping mall - and promptly bumped shoulders with a passerby. "Oopsies! Sorry!" She squealed, smiling brightly at the man before turning and hurrying on her way.
She hadn't gone far when the sound of a high-pitched, familiar voice caused her to look up from the window display she'd become absorbed in. The teen turned just in time to see a redheaded figure make her way through the crowd towards her, and immediately her face lit up in another sunny smile. "Chi-hi-ro!" She called, breaking up her cousin's name into three separate entities and doing an odd little dance in place to express her happiness.
She was soon presented with an odd mechanical device, full of lights and sound and arms, and she let out a theatrical gasp at the sight of it. "Wowzers! What is that?" It was clearly another one of Chihiro's inventions, but it was impossible to tell what its function was. Like Yumiko, Chihiro possessed a deep love and talent for technology, but took her passion a step further by actually inventing things. "It looks like an octopus, and it's shiny. A shiny robot octopus? That sounds like something from a magic book! What does it do?"
Her question was soon answered as a bouncing, excited Chihiro burst into a rambling explanation of the gadget's many uses and functions. "Yeah, it's cool! It's cool like a penguin's cool!" She burst into giggles. Only with her cousin - and a select few other relatives, though her two siblings and father wouldn't understand - could she indulge in things like this. With everyone else, her enthusiasm was misunderstood completely. They just didn't understand. "Does it really shoot laser beams form its eyes? Where are its eyes anyway? You should show me how it works! Would you, Chi, pleeease? I want a massage and coffee and laser beams, too!"
Eyes shining, she settled down enough for the other girl to answer, swaying slightly on her feet as if she simply could not stand still for more than a few seconds at a time. "Please?" She threw in, for good measure.
