Not many expected such affluent scientists to have such a nurturing side, after all. Eccentric environmentalists to the core, The Chabatas were both successful botanists and genetic engineers, whose main focus was on genetically-engineering plants to grow in unfamiliar environments. They were going to solve world hunger and save the planet, those two. The only thing they couldn't accomplish was making a child of their own. It was what they wanted more than anything in the world; and when medically-approved fertility treatments weren't even enough, they turned to their own methods of genetic whosawhatsits. However, this too proved to be futile, and they eventually gave up the idea altogether. But it would seem that they may have mixed a few chemicals somewhere along the way. Months after they'd given up hope of making children of their own, they heard a strange sound from their greenhouse. Upon closer inspection, they decided that it was the crying of an infant. They frantically searched until they found the source: the cabbage patch. It was slightly muffled, leading them to believe that it was stuck under something. It wasn't until they'd nearly gone mad with worry over the source of the strange crying that they finally peeled away the leaves of one of the cabbages, discovering therein a child buried in the soil up to the neck. Without any idea how, the Chabatas had managed to literally grow a child. That wasn't all, though. It wasn't much later in the day that they discovered another child's head among the cabbages. Then, a little less than a year after that, two more cabbage babies (one of these second pair was Himawari, incidentally) were discovered in the patch. Though they were baffled and somewhat terrified, they had no choice but to raise the children themselves. They left their secluded home to escape suspicion, moving to the North district of Midori. They confided in no one the origin of these strange babies, except for their personal friend and family physician, Dr. Tanaka Ryuutarou. Someone had to sign off on their shots and such, after all. Besides her strange beginnings and the occasional disjuncts between herself and normal human children, Himawari's life has actually been relatively normal. Her worrisome parents sheltered and spoiled her more than the average teenager has experienced and she's been subject to occasional scientific experiments at their behest. But other than keeping her origins strictly secret, Himawari hasn't dealt with issues too different than the rest of her peers.

[bg=#ececec][atrb=border,0,true][atrb=align,center,true][atrb=width,425,true] Though "genetic accident" or even "mutant" might be more appropriate, the Chabata family prefers "cabbage patch kid" or CBK to describe its children. Being a CBK comes with a number of differences between other people. For one, they are photosynthetic. Instead of blood, their veins run with a clear, chlorophyll-like material. This means that they need to be exposed to sunlight daily -- though, if not, foods can help supplement their diet, especially sugary ones. However, sweets in great quantities have a similar effect to them as alcohol does to humans (without the liver damage, of course). Food isn't strictly necessary, though there's no harm in eating it and it's digested mostly normally. Finally, all of the Chabata children have bizarre hair and eye colors. There's not really a method to it, besides the fact that they're strange. The only other secret that Himawari has is that she's secretly not-so-interested in this school rivalry. Not only is she not very competitive, but she's also going through a bit of a boy-crazy phase. But when her friends get involved, she can play along, if only for the fun of it. To be fair, her life has been a bit of an everything-crazy phase. When her interest locks on to something or someone, she tends to pursue it with extreme fervor. When her sheltered naivety and curiosity are taken in to consideration, it can be a bit of a dangerous habit.
