In Ren's case, Kami-sama put him in charge when humans started making alcohol and Ren has never been entirely sober since then. Simply put, Ren is the god of alcohol. After actually passing his freshman years, he's actually failed twice and is still a junior. Just biding his time until he becomes of legal age.
